flattened textarea text box when using UseHTMLEditor

when I use UseHTMLEditor the text box does not show options for editing the text.
the text box is simply flattened, making it impossible to use

im using the "fieldtype" as VARCHAR. Do i need to change it?

1. Make the fieldtype TEXT, to be on a safe side.
2. Make sure you are using an updated browser, like Chromium Edge, Chrome, Firefox, etc. Note: do not use the phprad inbuilt browser for checking it.
3. Hard reload the page or clear your browser cache.
