Images are uploaded fine, but they are alway cropped in List page; why?

Hello,
I'm creating a little CMS where the user upload info about wine and bottles.
Along all informative fields there are lots of image fields.
The images are uploaded without constraints.
In the List page I've set image to be 50x50px. So, an image that is 200x50px is cropped in the center. I can go with this.
But if you click the image it opens a lightbox containing the same (cropped) image. Is there a way to display the image 100% without cropping in the lightbox?
What is the utility of this behaviour? I think that in the lightbox the image should be set max-width: 100%.
But perhaps I'm missing something.
Please help me understand better this great application.
